Learnings from the Mw7.8 Gorkha earthquake, implications for megathrust earthquakes and seismic hazard
Jean-Philippe Avouac,

Jean-Philippe will give an overview of the near-field ground motion and source characteristics from the April 2015 Mw7.8 Gorkha earthquake. Results are based on the analysis of high rate GPS, accelerometric records, and remote sensing. We will see that this earthquake generated only mild ground shaking, mostly because of its source characteristics. Also, Jean-Philippe will discuss the factors controlling near-field ground motion (including resulting damage to structures), and speculate about implications for future earthquakes in the Himalaya and for megathrust earthquakes in general.
