Location: Rothenberg Hall at The Huntington Library

In 1815, an impoverished and artless British surveyor named William Smith embarked on a single-handed quest to map the geological strata of England and Wales. This year we are observing the 200th anniversary of Smith's groundbreaking map, and this lecture— jointly sponsored by Caltech and the Huntington—is part of a series of events to commemorate the anniversary.

Simon Winchester, author of The Map That Changed the World: William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology, tells the extraordinary story.

A book signing will follow the lecture.

This event is free; no tickets or reservations are required.
